A highlight of the year, the 8th annual Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta was held on March 3 at the LHS Pool with the usual crazy costumes, sinking boats, wet students and the lucky ones to make it to the other side of the pool intact. The team of Mike Lamoreaux and Robert Anderton, both students in West Shore Career-Tech’s Auto Tech program, finished in third place at the 18th annual Cleveland Automotive Technology Competition held at the I-X Center on Feb. 28. Each team was given 2 hours to repair bugs/faults intentionally set on their vehicles, a 2010 Buick Lucerne.

Senior Alex Neidert captured third place in the annual Cleveland area Shakespeare Competition, sponsored by the Cleveland branch of the English-Speaking Union held Feb. 27 at Playhouse Square's Idea Center. Neidert was one of 32 students in the contest who were judged on their acting, speech and memory skills as they read Shakespeare scenes and sonnets. The winner of the competition, a Shaker High student, moves on to the national competition in New York.
Ohio Graduation Tests will be administered at Lakewood High School the week of March 15th – March 19th .  All 10th grade students and any 11th or 12th grade students who currently need to pass one or more tests must take part in this testing.  Lakewood High School will follow a special bell schedule during testing week.  Students taking the Ohio Graduation Tests are to report to testing rooms by 8:15 a.m. each day.  Daily testing will conclude at 10:55 a.m.  All other students who are not testing must report to school by 11:05 a.m. during testing week.

Student registration for 2010-2011 kindergarten will take place on Tuesday, March 23 from 2:00-7:000 p.m. at all Lakewood elementary schools. Children may be registered at their neighborhood school on this day only. If you are unable to register on March 23, you will need to register at the Board of Education, 1470 Warren Road between 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Parents may register a child who will turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 30, 2010.

The Board of Education at its Feb. 16 meeting voted to amend the Lakewood City Schools Master Facilities Plan to include renovating the eastern half of Lakewood High School, rebuilding Roosevelt Elementary and rebuilding or renovating Lincoln Elementary. That decision would mean that Grant Elementary would be closed as part of the third and final phase of the plan.

The Ranger Cafe @ West Shore will be closed on March 16 & 17 due to mandatory state testing being administered to students those days. The restaurant will also be closed during Spring Break on April 6 & 7. If you'd like to make reservations for any other dates, please call 216-529-4165 and press "1".
Lakewood City Schools will be conducting standardized testing beginning March 1, 2010 for multiple purposes, one of which is meeting state requirements for gifted identification. Referrals for gifted identification testing are being taken for grades 3, 5 and 6. If you would like to refer your child for testing please contact either your child’s building principal or teacher. Lakewood City Schools will test all students at the following grade levels: grade 1; grade 2; grade 4; and grade 7 therefore referrals at these grade levels are not needed.

The Lakewood Complete Count Committee, which includes the Lakewood City Schools, is partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to raise awareness of the 2010 Census and help achieve a complete and accurate count of the growing and changing U.S. population. Sealed bids for Lakewood High School Art & Science Buildings Asbestos Abatement and Lamp & Ballast Removal will be received at the Business Services Department of the Lakewood City School District, 1470 Warren Road, Lakewood, Ohio 44107 before 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at which time they will be opened and read aloud.
