It is that time in the school year where it is time for your child to make important scheduling decisions for shaping  their future.  We are committed to the success of our students and it is our intention to provide both our students and their families with all the tools necessary to achieve their goals as well as take advantage of the amazing opportunities available to them at Lakewood High. 

Thanks to their work with the nonprofit Facing History & Ourselves, a group of 11 Lakewood High students and their teachers will be among a select audience of high school students from across the country who will participate in a workshop on Feb. 10 at the White House on the impact of music from the civil rights movement. Throughout the month of February, LHS will celebrate the great contributions of African Americans to our nation’s history. Events include an essay contest with a first prize of $50, a spoken word night on Thursday, Feb. 18 and a movie of the week series. We also have daily announcements highlighting great Black Americans, intermingled with “trivia questions of the day.” Finally, the Race and Diversity club will host two discussion forums, one on Feb. 3  and one Feb. 17, on the importance and meaning of Black History Month. Join us in the celebration. 

Lakewood High's National Honor Society welcomed 55 new members into the prestigious academic group at an induction ceremony held at the Civic Auditorium on Jan. 28. Gaining entry into NHS is the highest honor a school can bestow upon a student. Besides academic excellence – candidates must have a cumulative 3.5 GPA – a student is evaluated on his or her character, leadership skills and dedication to service and their involvement in school activities.

The Ranger Café @ West Shore opened its doors to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 26, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony that marked a new chapter in the culinary arts program's history. Superintendent Madak and members of the Board of Education were on hand to celebrate the occasion along with invited guests from the community. Patty Ryan of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce presented a plaque to welcome the restaurant into the business community.

The month of February has H20 looking for volunteers to work the Preschool Super Saturday Fair, help put together blankets and afghans for the homeless and lend a hand with Eat Well Lakewood. Check out the calendar to see what other opportunities where you can pitch in.

Past issues will eventually be added as well.

Lakewood Public Library has teamed with The Princeton Review to offer Lakewood residents free ACT prep classes at the library. Five classes are scheduled plus a practice test session. Class size is limited. For session dates and to find out about participation requirements, click here.
